With the market for electrified vehicles having matured, Beijing is preparing for the next wave. The regime wants to have a fleet of 4 million vehicles with a fuel cell.
A new roadmap was released on October 22nd. This is version 3.0 for new energy vehicles, established by the Society of Engineers of China (SAE China).
China now wants to massively develop fuel cells. While there are currently more than 25,000 hydrogen vehicles in the country, the ambition is to reach more than 4 million units by 2040. The scope of application concerns commercial vehicles.
The roadmap aligns with the interministerial document from September. and which calls for more demonstrators and infrastructure development. Some provinces have already launched projects in this direction.
While the trade association for vehicle manufacturers believes that hydrogen mobility is only just getting started, it acknowledges that Government support can promote its development. It is worth recalling that one of the most ardent supporters is Wan Gang, the man who put China on the path to electrification. The former minister and President of the Chinese Science Association stated at a congress in September that hydrogen initiatives needed better coordination and scaling up.
