Belgium is seeking to determine the potential of natural hydrogen in its subsoil, and the Lorraine region could provide some answers. The Belgian Federal Minister for Climate and Environmental Transition, Jean-Luc Crucke, accompanied by Belgian scientists, is visiting a drilling site in Pontpierre, in the French department of Moselle, on Tuesday.

Belgium recently launched a national scientific exploration program for natural hydrogen, also known as "native" or "white" hydrogen. Led by the Geological Survey of Belgium at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and facilitated by Belspo (the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office), "BE.Hydrogen" aims to identify potentially suitable areas in the country's subsoil and to gather scientific data. An initial assessment will be conducted in two years, in spring 2028.
