At an international conference on hydrogen in Moscow, Gazprom Hydrogen has announced the start of extensive research into the extraction of natural hydrogen in Siberia.

Gazprom's research into natural hydrogen is not new. Since 2020, the Russian group has been conducting studies at the Kovykta field in the Irkutsk region, where analyses of gas extracted from Several wells have revealed the presence of natural hydrogen at a concentration of 3%. If the concentration is not high enough to consider immediate industrial extraction, Gazprom Hydrogen CEO stressed the importance of this breakthrough, which confirms the presence of hydrogen in soils.

Gazprom intends to continue its analyses until the end of the year. « We will then move on to the stage of searching for options with a higher hydrogen concentration. The outlook is good " explained Konstantin Romanov, head of Gazprom Hydrogen.

Considered one of the most important sites in Russia with exploitable gas reserves reaching 1,8 trillion cubic meters, The Kovykta field has geological characteristics favorable to the coexistence of hydrogen with other gases such as methane, helium and nitrogen.
