
Researchers from theUniversity of Toronto and University of Ottawa studied the Canadian Shield, a vast region that is home to some of the oldest rock formations on the planet.
For the first time, they directly measured the hydrogen escaping from these billion-year-old rocks, tracked how this gas accumulates over time, and mapped the areas where hydrogen concentrations are highest.
The results, published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could help determine whether natural hydrogen, or "white hydrogen", can become a practical and economically viable energy source.
This study also proposes a new hydrogen exploration strategy that could support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand available clean energy solutions.
